Growing up in the central coastal region of California, I gained exposure, at an early age, to the art colonies and galleries of Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, Los Gatos and San Francisco. My 3rd grade teacher told my parents that I was an Artist, and that set the ball rolling. As a teenager I explored the colony of Artists, Writers, and Musicians living in the houseboats along the waterfront of Sausalito. It was on one of those houseboats, shared by Alan Watts, and the Artist Jean Varda, that I first decided I wanted to be an artist. While watching Varda’s creative process, I was struck by the feeling that this was the most natural way for a man to live. It was during those years that I began to augment my formal education in the Arts by taking Creative Art workshops from local artists, and artisans as I continued my Art studies in High School and College.
Several years ago, I became involved in Plein Air Painting. I joined Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association at its inception, moved to the Monterey area, and have been serving on the board of MBPAPA, in various positions over 14 years, including 8 years as President of MBPAPA.
